PROJECTS
The Children's Museum
of the Valley
In August, 2004 the latest JLY project was unveiled, The Children's Museum of
the Valley. Designed as a hands-on museum and located in downtown Youngstown,
the educational exhibits and interactive activities give the guests of the
Mahoning Valley a place where children play to learn and adults learn to play.
Hope
House Visitation Center
This is possibly the League’s most ambitious project to date. On July 16, 1999,
after several years of research and fundraising, the Junior League of Youngstown
broke ground for the construction of this new visitation center for children who
have been removed from their homes and placed in the care of Mahoning County
Children Services, largely due to cases of abuse and neglect. Hope House
provides a home-like atmosphere for court-ordered supervised visitation.
You’ve Got a
Friend
A program that provides assistance to mothers with cancer by offering homemaker
and respite care.
Board
Marketplace
A program that matches candidates with community boards.
Be Poison Smart
In conjunction with the Safe Kids Coalition, provided a poison control
informational campaign when the local poison control center closed. Reached
approximately 21,000 pre-school parents through Head Start and other pre-school
programs.
Silent Witness
Program
In April, 1996, the JLY unveiled the Silent Witness exhibits that consists of
statues of women and children representing actual victims who have lost their
lives to domestic violence. The Silent Witness figures have been on display in
hospitals, schools and religious and community centers to increase awareness of
domestic violence.
Drug and
Violence Free Zones
In collaboration with the Youngstown City Schools, community block watch groups
and local law enforcement agencies, the JLY began a program known as Drug and
Violence Free Zones. The JLY purchase signs that were placed within 1,000 feet
of every school inside the city limits. These signs designate the areas as Drug
and Violence Free. The schools, DARE, block watch groups and prosecutors enforce
the signs for the safety of children in the area.
Daybreak Runaway Shelter
This temporary shelter for runaways was presented to the Family Service
Agency to operate after the mortgage was retired.
Ronald McDonald
House
Established as the Tod Parent House, this facility is now a Ronald McDonald
House where families of hospitalized children can be housed comfortably and in
close proximity to their loved ones.
Leadership
Mahoning Valley
Begun in the mid-1980s as Leadership Youngstown, this program serves to
acquaint, train and provide a valuable network for community leaders,
Junior
Mentorship Program
A mentorship program that matches gifted Youngstown students with area
professionals.
VALU (Victims’
Advocacy Legal Unit)
A volunteer advocacy program that helps victims get temporary restraining
orders from court, and provides direct aid to victims of domestic abuse.
Woman-to-Woman
Program
A program designed to educate women concernng the alcohol-related problems
unique to women, alert women to community resources available to help, and offer
weekly support groups to bridge the gap between treatment and recovery.
