THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF YOUNGSTOWN

PAST PROJECTS

The Children's Museum of the Valley
In August, 2004 the latest JLY project was unveiled, The Children's Museum of the Valley. Designed as a hands-on museum and located in downtown Youngstown, the educational exhibits and interactive activities give the guests of the Mahoning Valley a place where children play to learn and adults learn to play.

Hope House Visitation Center
This is possibly the League’s most ambitious project to date. On July 16, 1999, after several years of research and fundraising, the Junior League of Youngstown broke ground for the construction of this new visitation center for children who have been removed from their homes and placed in the care of Mahoning County Children Services, largely due to cases of abuse and neglect. Hope House provides a home-like atmosphere for court-ordered supervised visitation.

Silent Witness Program
In April, 1996, the JLY unveiled the Silent Witness exhibits that consists of statues of women and children representing actual victims who have lost their lives to domestic violence. The Silent Witness figures have been on display in hospitals, schools and religious and community centers to increase awareness of domestic violence.

Drug and Violence Free Zones
In collaboration with the Youngstown City Schools, community block watch groups and local law enforcement agencies, the JLY began a program known as Drug and Violence Free Zones. The JLY purchase signs that were placed within 1,000 feet of every school inside the city limits. These signs designate the areas as Drug and Violence Free. The schools, DARE, block watch groups and prosecutors enforce the signs for the safety of children in the area.

Daybreak Runaway Shelter
This temporary shelter for runaways was presented to the Family Service Agency to operate after the mortgage was retired.
